Week Ending: 20th January 2012
Upper Nursery
Last week the children’s focus was to draw around a girl and a boy and put the outlines on the display board in our classroom. They made winter clothes which consisted of a hat, coat, scarf, boots, trousers and gloves using a variety of materials, and dressed the figures for winter. There was lots of Communication, Language and Literacy around the sort of clothes we wear in winter and summer and how we would feel if we wore summer clothes in winter and vice versa. They also did an experiment with temperature. Two plastic bottles were filled with warm water and one had a thick woolly scarf wrapped around it. The children placed the bottles on the windowsill and after ½ hour they felt the bottles to see which one was warmer.
The children’s highlight of this week was playing with snow… ( it was fake snow so the children had all of the fun and we had none of the problems of snowy weather. The children also created patterns for printing on “scarves” made for winter clothing.
Lower Nursery
Last week the children in the Lower Nursery rooms looked at winter weather and the changes it brought outside. They also learnt numbers 1 – 5 and enjoyed sorting out objects and counting them out. Their favourite book was The Polar Bear and the Snow Cloud.
This week the theme of winter weather prompted much talk about appropriate clothing and the adults encouraged the children to practise how to dress themselves as well as helping their friends. Learning how to take turns contributed to their Personal and Social Development.
Toddler
Last week the toddlers enjoyed learning new nursery rhymes and they made a Little Bo-beep display, one of the children’s favourite rhymes.
They also played with ice, with insects and animals toys and learnt how to eat using a fork instead of a spoon.
This week the Toddlers “had a look” Under the Sea. The children went on a walk to look at a river to see if they could spot any fish. The children also played with fish and sea animals in the water tray and hooked them out with fishing nets. Some children made fish shaped biscuits, enjoying helping to mix the ingredients and cut out the shapes.
Baby Rooms
The babies enjoyed playing with rainmakers and had fun building towers with textured cubes.
The large inflatable toy animals were set out in the hall this week enabling physical play for the older babies who had fun climbing on and off the toy animals. They also explored objects in treasure baskets and enjoyed the touch and feel of texture books which they looked at with the adults.
