Year 2 pupils at Meadowpark School in Cricklade have received praise from author Dame Lynley Stuart Dodd after sending her their story inspired by her book “Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy.”
The children at the school in Cricklade read the classic book about a dog and his friends as part of their literacy topic on rhyming stories. They enjoyed the book so much that they wrote their own tribute called “Sid the Snake Eating Cake” and sent it to the New Zealand based author to read.
The children’s author wrote back saying that she had enjoyed the story. “I especially loved imagining a giraffe in a bath (all legs and neck!) What a lot of soap would be needed!”
Hawthorn Class celebrated their story and reply from Lynley with a huge ‘Sid the Snake’ cake baked by Carrie Clifford from Blunsdon House Hotel, who also hosts the school’s cooking club.
First written in 1983, “Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy” has sold more than 11 million books worldwide and has been translated into several languages. For their next book, Hawthorn class will be looking at the Allan and Janet Ahlberg story Funnybones to help them with their instruction writing!
